3D Sketching For YOU!!!

OBJECTIVE 4.00 Communicate the Design Process
Ok Students, and all those following our new school blog....here is a good example of a 3D Sketching tool.

Hopefully we will try this out in class! However, you can download the free version at this website at home. There is ALSO a site where you can watch videos to see if you will like it. The videos show you how to use this FREE product at Google. So check out this site!!!
http://sketchup.google.com/training/videos/new_to_gsu.html

Also you can check out the blog, with cool competitions on 3D modeling...such as a bridge building competition and more. Check out this site.
http://sketchupdate.blogspot.com/search/label/3D%20Warehouse

IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT YOU LIKE LEAVE SOME COMMENTS (click comments below) on this blog about what you discovered or thought was cool for the class. We will read it online.
Hope you can try this out and bring back some reports on what you were able to design online.

DESIGN A DESK or A CHAIR
When you see the videos, you might want to check out the video about designing a chair. Would it be possible to design our 21st century desk using this software? Remember our ideas for a new desk?(see other blogposts on this site.)

PATENTS and INVENTING!
ALSO if you are REALLY the inventor type...then look up Google Patents online, and use this program to search desks that have been patented. Do you have an idea that could be patented? Check out all the things that have been made. See how they draw United States Patents. The United States Patent and Trademark Office require that their drawings be drawing with a certain kind of drawing style that might look old-fashioned. Anyway, hope you have fun with the drawing stuff!

Thanks
Mr. White

21st Century Desk Prototype

Our prototype and idea. In this picture we have started to ACT ON OUR BEST SOLUTION to a problem. Students were looking at desks that we use in schools. They found that there were many problems. The students and teacher found three major problems. (1) The students said that they were uncomfortable. (2) the teacher noticed that conventional desks were easy to sleep on and they were not mobile and did not engage the students. (3) the teacher said that this is the 21st century, and wondered why our desks were not a touch screen laptop.

Above, in this picture, you will see that we addressed these solutions by experimenting with a comfortable rolling chair, and a wooden lap desk that was made by the manufacturing class last week (http://www.manufacturingclass.blogspot.com/ ) and we used our current Smart board touch screen to make a prototype of the touch screen that should be on the lap board. IT WORKED.

Later we LOOKED BACK and EVALUATED what we had done and commented on the possible effectiveness of our solutions. (Do you have any comments about our work, or desks? Please feel free to leave those below ----click on the word "comments")

WHAT IS THE D.E.A.L. ??
Students are learning how to solve problems in our technology class. (They have already been doing that their whole life! Now they are learning a formal way to solve technological problems)

Students already learn to solve problems using methods and steps in math class. For instance in an Algebra class you learn specific steps to solve an algerbra problem. Then in Calculus class they show you an easier way to solve the same problem using calculus! Now we want to learn how to solve problems and then design or build things with our solutions to those problems.

In our Fundamentals of Technology class we are learning one way of solving problems. This is a formal problem solving method. This means that we use a formal, or specific type of process, or steps, to solve a problem. Our process is called the DEAL Problem Solving Method. It is what has been given as an example for us to use in our state's technology curriculum.

Ideas for new Desks....

We are designing a new desk. The old ones are uncomfortable and are easy to sleep on. ALSO we want our new desk to be a touch screen across the entire surface.
(THANKS TO OUR VOLUNTEER FOR DEMONSTRATING some of the "uncomfortable" aspects of the desks. Sometimes sitting in one place on a hard desks, leads to boredom...which leads to sleep! SEE SOLUTION IN THE NEXT POST ( ABOVE )AS OUR VOLUNTEER IS ENGAGED in learning with his new chair, lap desk, and smart board example)

Morning Warm-up Projects

1st period has a warm-up project where they work on their lab room(which is a class service project.) They are in charge of the technology areas of transportation, construction, and design. Here is a picture of a model helicopter project. One team of students are working on this. Another team of students is working with CO2 car equipment and materials. They will gather info on the cars and do model projects.

CAREER ACTIVITY!!

HELLO STUDENTS, Hope class is going well!
Here are some activities for all of my classes today (including manufacturing class)
HAVE YOU EVER EXPLORED POSSIBLE CAREERS? IF NOT THEN TODAY YOU WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO EXPLORE our country's Occupational Outlook Handbook . THIS GREAT WEB TOOL WAS MADE THROUGH THE USE OF YOUR TAX DOLLARS.
ITS FREE FOR EVERYONE TO USE!!! (I posted it on the blog so you would also be able to explore this good resource here and wherever you can access the Internet) Enjoy!!!

ACTIVITY #1
USE A BLANK SHEET OF NOTEBOOK PAPER TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:(Don't rip out the paper...or use pages from your design journal. You will need to put this paper in your binder after it has been checked)
1. What are your plans a job/occupation after high school? Are you working now, in high school, or on breaks, or in the summer time? If so, then you are gaining valuable work experience (Answer these questions in just a couple of sentences.)
2. What is your career path now in high school, have you chosen that career path? Will you continue to study after you graduate from high school? If yes, then where? (write a paragraph about your educational goals)
3. Do you have a career goal? If so what is that goal? If not then what type of technology or job field would you be interested in investing your time and energy if you had the chance? (Answer in complete sentences )
TURN IN YOUR ANSWERS AFTER YOU FINISH THE NEXT ACTIVITY. (You will also make a list - see below)

ACTIVITY #2
NOW, here is a wonderful website that has SO MANY HELPFUL THINGS about careers and jobs, for now and in the future. Have you seen this?
http://www.bls.gov/OCO/
Your goal today is to browse this website for ANYTHING that interests you. ON Y OUR PAPER, MAKE A LIST OF TEN JOBS, CAREERS, or THINGS THAT INTERESTED YOU ON THIS WEBSITE.

DO A GOOD JOB...BECAUSE YOU ARE EXPLORING YOUR FUTURE...YOUR SUCCESS ON THIS ASSIGNMENT MIGHT POSSIBLIY HELP YOU PLAN YOUR FUTURE! NOW THAT IS EXCITING!!!

TAG CLOUD

This is a "TAG CLOUD" which the students made with the teacher. They gave examples, words, and ideas that would define, or relate to the word TECHNOLOGY
Our key question today is "WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?".
Standard Course of Study Objective 001.01 "Define and characterize technology"
Today the students will answer this key question by writing a 3 paragraph essay on the subject with the title "What is Technology" and the subtitle "My Views of Technology"
